Please note !!!!!!! Do not email or call Ten-Tec regarding this software. Ten-Tec memory files are called RMF files. The N4PY memory files are called RMY files. They save the VFO B value if split is on. The Ten-Tec RMF files do not save the split values. Changes: Version 2.00 1) Fixed problem that caused an interaction with VOX mode on and runing the internal auto tuner. 2) Added a new pegasus.ini parameter to define the switchover point between the 40 meter SSB band button and the 41 meter SWL band button. See the description in pegasus.txt under "License Class". 3) Fix minor problem where MWSTEP was not used when going to AM or SAM mode while in the MW band. 4) Added a new function to remove the main tuning knob and replace it with six new buttons. These new buttons control the frequency of VFO A and VFO B and the filter selections for VFO A and VFO B. See the new option "MAIN TUNING KNOB" in the "pegasus.txt" file. 5) Added a new selection for the remote tuning pod keys. It is called "mute" and will mute the receiver. 6) Fixed the A swap B VFO function for configurations using the pegasus and rx320 and running a separate rx320 program. 7) Added a new window to the settings menu called "steps". This window allows you to define the step sizes for all the step buttons and also the default step size when you change modes. This window removes the need to set step sizes by modifying the pegasus.ini file directly. 8) Greatly enhanced the processing speed of the memory file system. This allows huge memory files (up to 29000 entries) to be run without performance degredation. Note that when large memory files are first loaded, there may be a delay while the program processes the file into memory. Because you can now have huge memory files, it is possible to construct a memory file based on the ILG database. If you are a member of the ILG database (www.ilgradio.com), you can download an ascii text version of their data. This is a file called "ilgstext.zip". I have a DOS utility program that can convert this database to a "CDF" file which can then be imported into the Pegasus control program. Send me an email if you would like to have this file converting program. 9) When using the RX340 or RX331 when a station is selected from a memory file, if the mode is AM, it will now be automatically changed to SAM mode. 10) The default filter positions for each mode are now defined with menu settings in the "Preferences2" window of the settings menu. 11) The default AGC settings for each mode are now defined with menu settings in the "Preferences2" window of the settings menu. 12) Most parameters can now be changed directly in the program without the need to directly change the "pegasus.ini" file with menu settings in the "Preferences2, "Preferences3", "Preferences4", "Steps", and "RTTY Settings" windows of the "settings" menu. 13) A new option "Auto Memory File Select" is in the "preferences3" window. See the "pegasus.txt" file for information on this option. 14) Added a new option to not have the frequency display change to red when transmitting. See the "preferences4" description in "pegasus.txt". 15) Added a new option to have the S Meter display not change during transmit. See the "preferences4" description in "pegasus.txt". 16) AccInp setting is now remembered across sessions. 17) Support for the RX350 is now added in this version. See Pegasus.txt. 18) Support for the new "Jupiter enhanced PC commands" that allow PC operation with front panel control is now added to this version. See "Jupiter Logging Mode Only" in Pegasus.txt. Version 2.01 1) Fixed bug introduced in version 2.00 that prevented the LOCK button from working. 2) Added a new line in the "Help" menu called "N4PY Help". This is a shortcut that starts "notepad" with the "pegasus.txt" file. It is convenient for quick references to the help information. 3) For the standalone receiver setups without a transmitter, there is now a new button labelled "BOT". This button will change the frequency to the bottom of the current band. This does the same function as the "Band Bottom" that can be define on the remote tuning pod. 4) Made the RX350 and Jupiter in "Jupiter Logging Mode Only" get the initial frequency, mode, and filter from the radio rather then the last value used by the program. 5) Fixed several problems associated with the Jupiter firmware level 1.19. Version 1.19 now works fine in both "pegasus emulation mode" and "jupiter logging mode only". 6) Extended range of transmit filter selection to 8 khz. This is so the audiophiles can experiment on the pegasus with wide transmit files. 7) For the rx340 and rx331, if the filter is changed from a value above 4 khz to a value below 4 khz, there was an AGC bump that occurred. I now send an AGC dump command in this situation to remove the AGC bump. Version 2.02 1) Fixed small anolmaly that for memory files that had multiple entries for the same frequency when using frequency sort. Tha anolmaly was that the displayed station name did not always match the station selected. 2) Fixed problem with the automatic internal tuner on the Jupiter. 3) Fixed problem with "tuner power silder" not reappearing when auto tuner is selected. 4) Implemeted a password copy protection scheme. You can run the program for 10 days without a password. During this time, you must send the install number to n4py@earthlink.net to get your password. Your password only needs to be entered once. It is good for all following versions until your subscription expires. It is always good for a version you obtained under a current subscription. The same install number and password will allow multiple versions to run on the same computer but not on another computer. 5) Added an automatic CW ID for the 10 minute ID timer. See new description of the ID button in "pegasus.txt". 6) Added a CW keyboard keyer with 5 memories. Also added enhanced weight controls for both the paddle keyer and the keyboard keyer. See "Keyboard Keyer" description in "pegasus.txt". 7) Enhanced the program to remove the EXT T/R glitch in the pegasus at startup. Sometimes the EXT T/R line comes up in the on state when this pegasus starts. This new function will reset the EXT T/R line when the pegasus is initialized. 8) Added a keyer dit weight control in addition to a keyer dah weight control. See the description is the "CW Keyboard Keyer" section of "pegasus.txt". 9) Made changes in the startup sequence to make the program more tolerant of broken serial messages. This should help with some USB to serial converters. 10) Changed range of memory scan dwell time from 1 to 30 seconds to 1 to 99 seconds. 11) If mode is toggled between CW and CWR, the filter and step settings will not change. This is now done this way to make evaluating whether to use CW or CWR mode easier. Version 2.03 1) Fixed a problem with direct frequency entry from the tuning pod when the CW keyboard keyer was on. 2) Added a window to show the last 36 characters of keyed text in the keyboard CW buffer. This window is only available when the main tuning knob display is turned off. 3) Added the special CW characters SK and AR to the CW table. SK is sent with "$" and AR is sent with "@". Also added dah-di-di-dah. It is sent with the "*" key. The special character KN is sent with the "^". 4) Added a new window to the settings menu for Colors. See pegasus.txt in the "Colors Window" section for details. 5) Move the rest of the relevant pegasus.ini options to the settings menu. The settings menu tab is now a drop down list as there are 20 selections on it. 6) Fixed the CW keyboard keying problem on Windows NT, 2000, and XP. There is now a setting in the CW Settings window to use NT KB Keying for these 3 operating systems. Windows 95, 98, and ME users should not use this setting. 7) Fixed problem where the CW keyboard keyer would occationally go dead. The keyboard focus was moving away from the radio panel when the filter or step were changed. I added code to restore the keyboard focus back to the radio panel. 8) Fixed small problem when the mic or accessory input button was clicked in the transmitter settings window the setting was not remembered across sessions. However, the AccInp button setting was remembered. 9) Fixed a problem that caused the noise blanker setting to not get sent to the pegasus on on pegasus restart if the noise blanker had been left on during a previous running of the program. 10) Move user configurable transverter buttons more to the left to make room for additional band buttons when the 60 meter band becomes available. 11) On the sweep panel, added an extra blue vertical bar to show the frequency the radio is tuned to. This only shows when the sweep is using a different radio than the main radio such as the rx320 with the pegasus as the main radio. 12) Added an option on the interface window to run the RX320 all by itself. Version 2.04 1) Fixed small problem where VFO B does not get muted on exit if "dual" is on at exit time. 2) Blocked TX slider level changes from remote mode when using a transverter. 3) Removed the duplication of the transmit power controls in the "Transmitter" window of the "settings" menu. 4) The operation of the TX Slider is now different when a transverter is in use. The drive power specified in the settings menu for the transverter in use now sets the maximum drive power for that particular transverter. This also changes the scale of the TX slider such that full up on the TX slider corresponds to this maximum drive power. This prevents accidental overdrive to the transverter if the TX slider is moved by mistake. 5) Removed the transmit audio source controls from the "Transmitter" window. This function can be done from the radio panel "AccInp" button. 6) Enhanced the user transverter algorithm to allow transverters for frequencies below the AM broadcast band. 7) Memory scan is now stopped if a transmission occurs. There is a new parameter in "Preferences4" to allow the scan to be automatically restarted. See the "Scan" section and "Preferences4" section. 8) Created a new "RX340 Special" settings window for the RX340. It contains two settings that were previously only set directly from the "pegasus.ini" file. See the "rx331.doc" file. 9) The "EXT-T/R" slider now has independent settings for CW mode verses all other modes. When you set this slider in CW, it will remember the non-CW mode setting. This allows separate values for CW and SSB modes. 10) Added "LO CUT" and "HI CUT" buttons to the center of the radio panel. These buttons are only active in SSB mode. They only appear when the main tuning knob option is not selected. See "Main Tuning Knob Configuration" in "pegasus.txt". 11) Added a way to operate the LDG external auto tuner AT-11MP with the pegasus and Jupiter. See the section on "External tuner" in pegasus.txt. Thanks to Mark Erbaugh, N8ME, for information on this feature. 12) Fixed problem with moving the volume slider while sweep is in progress. 13) Fixed problem that prevented the Jupiter/RX340 combination from working like the Pegasus/RX340 combination. Version 2.05 1) Special fix for problems with Jupiter not connecting to the program. I used the DTR line for control of the external tuner. Some computers serial ports do not work with the DTR line disabled. The external tuner feature cannot be used on these computers. 2) Added a retry loop if the radio fails to link up with the program. 3) Fixed problem with passwords when installing on a driver different then the C drive. 4) Added the ability to set the size and color of your call sign that displays on the radio panel. See "Call Sign, TopTen Window" in "pegasus.txt". 5) Fixed bug with the "GEN" band button. Previously, this band button was not working. 6) Fixed problem with N4PY Help file not starting when clicking on N4PY Help. This will now automatically start if you have a program associated with "txt" files in your windows configuration. 7) Added a CW Keyboard keyer memory delayed repeat function. See the end "CW Keyboard Keyer" section in "pegasus.txt". 8) Added a frequency scan function. See "Frequency Scan" in "pegasus.txt". 9) Fixed a small bug where the noise blanker slider could sometimes show on the RX320 only configuration. Also made the FM mode button not operate when the rx320 only configuration is set since the rx320 does not have FM mode. 10) Fixed bug with right clicking on filter or locut buttons causing the RIT value to get set to zero. 11) Added a high resolution check box to the spectrum sweep window. Selecting this yields much higher display resolution. However, the speed of the sweep is slowed down. You can decide whether resolution or speed is more important for you use with this setting. Also, changed the mode used during sweep from AM to CW. 12) Fixed a strange bug when going to CW mode with manual mode on. With Manual mode on, clicking the CW button would not work. 13) I removed the need for the PEGPORT Program. This function is now directly in the N4PY Control Program. It is selected by using the "Call Sign, TopTen" window of the "Settings" menu. See "Using Top Ten Devices Antenna Control" in "Pegasus.txt". 14) Fixed program crash if you set a transverter drive power to 0. Also corrected a transverter frequency problem with a VLF converter. Version 2.06 1) Changed background color of settings window from light gray to gray to make transistion from settings window to radio panel window more obvious. 2) Increase maximum size of memory file name from 40 characters to 128 characters. 3) Added mouse buttons M1 to M5 for CW keyboard memories. These are in addition to using the keyboard F1 to F5 keys to start the memories. 4) Fixed the remote pod "1" key not showing the numeric 1 as a selection. 5) Added support for the Argonaut V. 6) Fixed problem with noise blanker on Jupiter in pegasus emulation mode. 7) Fixed more issues with keyboard keyer losing focus when clicking various keys on the radio panel. 8) Fixed bug when using RIT from the remote pod and the tuning step is less than 10. 9) Fixed small bug where VFO A filter value gets messed up if spectrum sweep is on, the sweep uses a second radio, and an A/B is done. 10) Made a change to allow the logging programs to select RTTY mode 1 or RTTY mode 2 automatically. If a logging program set an SSB mode that is in the CW portion of a band, if RTTY 1 real mode matches matches the SSB mode, then RTTY mode 1 is selected. If RTTY mode 1 does not match, then RTTY real mode 2 is checked for a match. If it matches, then RTTY mode 2 is selected. In this way, logging programs can now select RTTY mode 1 or RTTY mode 2. 11) Added controls for the new LDG Electronic's PT-11 Plus memory tuner for the Pegasus. This tuner has memories so the settings can be saved by frequency. Version 2.07 1) Fixed problem with defining Argonaut V on a pegasus configuration that caused the "NB" slider to say "SQ" and be stuck there. 2) Changed the TopTen algorithm to use the transmit frequency instead of the receive frequency to determine the band settings. This is to allow for correct antenna selection on cross band operation. Also, I now clear the LPT port settings at EXIT time. 3) Changed the program title to show the primary radio connection type. This is to help with running multiple versions to show which program is for each radio. 4) Fixed problem with spectrum sweep resolution with Jupiter in front panel mode. Also fixed setting the AGC rate with Jupiter in front panel mode. 5) Added a memory tuner band segment setup procedure for the LDG PT-11 Plus internal tuner for the Pegasus. 6) Added VFO B polling with the Argonaut V if split is on. 7) Moved the Transmitter enable button to the radio front panel for easier access. 8) Fixed bug with CW Keyboard and NT Keying on the Argonaut V that caused frequency polling to stop running. 9) Fixed operation of frequency polling on the Argonaut V when the Argonaut V main VFO is VFO B. Also fixed up an Argo V RTTY offset problem. 10) Fixed an argonaut V file import problem with a 3000 hertz filter. 11) Enhanced the frequency scan function. You can now scan down in frequency as well as up in frequency. To scan down, just specify a stop frequency less than the start frequency. 12) Added the ability to get the frequency, mode, and filter from the Jupiter at start up when using the Jupiter in "Pegasus Emulation Mode". See the "Get Jupiter at Start" button description in the "Interface" section of the "pegasus.txt" file. 13) Removed turning off "split" when running the auto-tuner functions. 14) Changed the name of the PT-11 Plus tuner recall memory control button from "Rcl" to "Rcl Tnr" and made the button wider since this is the most used button with this tuner. 15) Fixed problem with N4PY Help not starting on Windows XP, NT, and 2000. Version 2.08 1) If "Use Line out for Speaker" is selected and "Get Jupiter at Start" is selected, do not adjust jupiter speaker volume at exit of program. 2) Add "Max Hold" to the "remembered" settings list for the Spectrum Sweep. 3) Add 6 kHz and 12 kHz widths to the Spectrum Sweep. 4) Made the 10 minute automatic CW ID only ID if a transmission has occurred during the previous 10 minute interval. 5) Fix problem with A/B and A=B when running spectrum sweep and using two receivers and transmitting. 6) Fixed problem with escape key not working if a CW memory was started with the "Mx" mouse buttons instead of the keyboard function keys. 7) Finally implemeted split mode setting from logging and external programs through the ten-tec file interface. 8) Auto notch and noise reduction settings now remembered across sessions. 9) Added the ability to save a PBT value in a memory. See the "STORE" button in the help file of pegasus.txt. 10) Added the new 60 meter ham band with a 60 meter band button. Version 2.09 1) Ignore a setting to use line for speaker if Jupiter Logging mode set. 2) Fix problem where VFO lock state moves to transmit VFO when up or down numeric is used to set a split frequency. 3) Added automatic setting up of 60 meter band parameters. When you go to 60 meters, the output power is reduced to 50 watts, the transmit filter is changed to 2.4 khz, and the low cutoff transmit bandpass is set at 300 hertz. When you leave the band, the old settings are restored. Also, the 60 meter SSB band button has a special right click feature that will toggle you through each of the 5 60 meter channels. 4) Fixed bug that caused memory tuner power to not be reduced when VOX was on even though TX slider indicated power was reduced. Version 2.10 1) If "Use Line out for Speaker" is selected and "Get Jupiter at Start" is selected, do not adjust jupiter speaker volume at exit of program. This change was somehow lost for version 2.08. 2) Changed 60 meter maximum transmit filter to 2250 per Doug Smith's at TenTec analysis. 3) Added a way to stop and start the CW keyboard action so you can type ahead while receiving. Also added a check in the keyboard sending routine so that words are not transmitted until a full word is sent. I am running Windows XP and find that the program locks up from time to time. What should I do. A. There is an option for windows XP in the Icon that you use to start the program. Right click on the Icon and select "properties". Then select "advanced". In here select "run in separate memory space". Q. I just got a new version and I want to know what has changed since the last version. How do I do this? A. You should open the "readme.txt" file using "WordPad" or "Word" and go to the bottom of the file. From the bottom, you should back up to the point where your last version was explained. From there, read forward to find out what is new in this version. Q. I just installed a new version. To be safe, I chose to install the new version in a different folder than the old one was in. How do I get all my old options back? A. All you have to do is copy the "pegasus.ini" file from your old folder to the new one. When you do this, make sure the N4PY pegasus program is not running. Q. My N4PY program is acting crazy. How do I reset everthing and just start over? A. This is easy to do. All you need to do is delete your "pegasus.ini" file from your "c:\n4py" folder or wherever you installed the N4PY pegasus program. Make sure the N4PY pegasus program is not running when you do this. Anytime the N4PY pegasus program starts, it if does not find a "pegasus.ini" file, it will build one from scratch with all the default values for the options set. You should never have to re-install the program. Please note, you should never delete the pegasus.ini file if you are using an RX340 or RX331. Q. How do I find out about all the options in the N4PY pegasus program? A. The N4PY pegasus program has lots of user definable options. In order to get the most out of this program, it is highly recommended that you take the time to read about all its functions. You can do this by clicking "help" and selecting "N4PY Help". Q. I would like to add an option to my N4PY pegasus software. The "pegasus.txt" file says I need to make a change to my pegasus.ini file to select this option. How do I do this? A. The "pegasus.ini" file controls all the settings for the N4PY pegasus program. Anytime you change this file, make sure the N4PY pegasus program is not running. If it is running and you change this file, you run the risk of losing the change. The easiest way to make a change to this file is use the windows supplied program called "NotePad". You can find "NotePad" by clicking "Start" on the lower left of your desktop. Next click "Programs". Once there click "Accessories" and finally "NotePad". Once you are in "Notepad", you need to "open" the "pegasus.ini" file. You click "open" and find the "pegasus.ini" that is in the "c:\n4py" folder or whatever folder you have installed the N4PY pegasus program. You can now make your change to the "pegasus.ini" file. Most (but not all) changes are done to the [OPERATING STATUS] section. First look for the line that you want to change to see if it is already there. If it is, simply change it to what you want. If the line is not already there, you must add it. The best place to add it is directly after the line that has the name of the section of the file you want to change (usually [OPERATING STATUS]). Q. My logging program does not work with the N4PY pegasus program. It works fine with the Ten-Tec pegasus program. What is wrong? A. Most logging software assumes the pegasus control files are located in the "c:\pegasus" folder. This is the default install folder for the ten-tec program. The N4PY default install folder is "c:\n4py". You can tell the N4PY pegasus program to use the "c:\pegasus" folder for its control files by setting the following in "Preferences4": TRANSFER FOLDER C:\PEGASUS Also make sure the TenTec File Interface box is checked in "Preferences3". If you set the above, make sure the "c:\pegasus" folder exists. If it doesn't, you need to create that folder. Also, if you are using "Logger", do NOT configure Logger for the N4PY File interface. Q. I use PSK31 and cannot transmit in the CW portion of the bands. What is wrong? A. There is a license class feature that makes sure that when you transmit, you are at a legal frequency and mode for your license priviledge. This feature will not let you transmit SSB in the CW portion of the band as this is illegal. There are two ways to solve this. The most straight forward and correct way, is to define an RTTY mode for use with PSK31. You then would use this RTTY mode instead of SSB for operating this mode. The other way to do this is to simply turn off license class checking. You do this by clicking off the check box labelled "Transmit follows license class" in the preferences window of the settings menu. If you do this, you run the risk of transmitting outside your legal operating priviledges. To define an RTTY mode, set the following settings in the "RTTY Settings" window: RTTY MODE USB RTTY OFFSET 0 RTTY LABEL PSK31 Q. For some reason, my N4PY pegasus program never remembers anything from a previous session. This is a real nuisance. What is going on? A. Most Likely, your "pegasus.ini" file has become a "read only file". If you know how to do it, you can simply change it to a "read-write type file" by changing its file attributes. If you don't know how to do this, you can simply delete the "pegasus.ini" file. The N4PY pegasus program will rebuild this file to all its default values the next time it starts. Q. Is there an easy way to change the filter settings without having to have all the filters defined with the 12 filter keys? A. Yes, there is a very easy way to move the filter setting up or down one position. If the right click on the left side of the filter picture window, you will move to the next wider filter position. If you right click on the right side of the filter picture window, you will move to the next narrower filter position. Alternatively, if you have unchecked the box "Use Main tuning Knob" in the "preferences2" window, you will have a filter button for each VFO. Q. How do I reset Pass Band Tuning back to zero? A. If you right click on the PBT drag window, PBT will be reset to zero. This also works for the RIT drag window. Q. What is the best way to operate split transmit for DX operation? A. First I'll assume you are using the Pegasus only with the remote tuning pod. The remote tuning pod can be configured to have 26 different functions on 14 of the 15 keys. You are tuning and find a DX station at 14.025. He says he is listening up 5 to 10. You would press the "Up" key followed by the "5" key. This would result in VFO B being set to 14.030 and "split" being turned on. Next, to be sure you don't move VFO A, click "LOCK". This locks VFO A so it never moves but leaves VFO B unlocked. Now, you press "REV" to temorarily swap to VFO B. You tune until you find the guy the DX station is working. Anytime you release the "REV" key, you hear the DX station. When you find the guy he is working, you release "REV", and transmit. You are right where he is listening. In this second scenario, I assume you have a Pegasus and either an RX320 or RX340 to allow full dual receive. In this mode, you can either use stereo headphones so the pegasus receiver is in one ear, and the rx320 or rx340 is in the other ear or you can use two speakers. I prefer the stereo headphones as it is really easy to tell who is who by which ear you hear them in. First you find the DX station at 14.025. You press "Up" followed by the "5" key. VFO B is now at 14.030 and "split" transmit is now automatically on. Next, you press the "dual" key. You are now hearing both sides at the same time. You press "VFO B" and now the main tuning knob controls VFO B and not VFO A. You tune until you find the station he is working. You transmit and you are right on the last place the DX was listening at. This goes great and I usually get right through the pileup quickly. Q. What is a good way to configure the remote tuning pod keys? A. I have my remote pod keys defined as follows: F1 = A/B F2 = A=B F3 = SPOT (turns on the CW spotting tone) Period Key = BOT (Go to the bottom of the current band) 0 = DUAL (toggle dual receive mode) 1 = Up ( set VFO B = VFO A + next numeric key and turn on split transmit mode) 2 = Down (set VFO B= VFO A _ next numeric key and turn on split transmit mode) 3 = Split (toggle split transmit setting) 4 = ALC (make the tuning knob control power output) 5 = RIT (make the tuning knob control RIT) 6 = PBT (make the tuning knob control PBT) 7 = VFO A (make the tuning knob control VFO A freq) 8 = VFO B (make the tuning knob control VFO B freq) 9 = PTT (use this key as a PTT control) If I want to do direct frequency entry, I just hit "enter" first, then the digits in mhz and then finally "enter". Note that you can also enter the frequency directly in khz if you enter a value greater than 1000. Some other functions that can be defined are Mode selections Reverse Next filter wider Next filter narrower Turn on Accessory Input and go to transmit (good for SSTV) Keyer Speed Tuning Selections Next higher Tuning Step size Next Lower Tuning step size This gives you pretty good control from a very convenient tuning pod located anywhere on the desk. Q. My N4PY Help entry on the toolbar does not work. What can I do to make this work? A. This entry should start your text editor so you can read the N4PY help file which is named "pegasus.txt". If this is not working, it means you do not have an association defined in windows to tell windows how to open files of extension type "TXT". From the windows start menu select "settings". Then select "Control Panel". On the control panel, double click on "Folder Options". In folder options, find the file type entry for extension type "TXT". Here, set "notepad" as the program to run when a TXT file is opened. For comments and suggestions email to n4py@earthlink.net Please do not email or call Ten-Tec regarding this software.
